Moving Tips

Once you’ve made the decision to move – it’s time to get packing! Moving involves a lot of steps, so creating an organized action plan is the best way to guarantee a successful move.

 

We’ve developed a list of tips and tricks to help guide you through each phase of the moving process. From packing each room in your home to making plans for your children and/or pets, we cover every aspect of the moving process to help make your move much easier. Packing, Moving & Unpacking Tips

Packing Tips

  • Pack a box of essentials (sheets, towels, etc.) for the first night in your new home.
  • Pack a current phone book to take with you in case you need to make calls to residents or businesses back in your former hometown.
  • Place a handful of fresh coffee, baking soda, or charcoal in a sock or nylon stocking inside your refrigerator to keep it smelling fresh.
  • Pack heavy items in small boxes, light items in larger boxes.
  • Place pictures between sheets and blankets for added protection.
  • Plates and records should be packed vertically, rather than placed flat
  • Tightly secure lids on medicine and toiletry items before packing
  • Remove bulbs before packing lamps

Moving Day

  • Keep your shipment registration number, found in the upper right-hand corner of your bill of lading, in case you need to call your mover
  • Provide contact information to your move coordinator and driver
  • Provide alternate contact information in case you can’t be reached
  • Arrange for pet sitters on moving day to keep your pet calm
  • Notify the post office with your new address for mail forwarding
  • Make sure all boxes are appropriately labeled before loading
  • Set all utilities to be shut off the day after your moving date
  • Make one last run through the house to make sure you’ve got everything

Unpacking

  • Make sure there’s adequate parking for the moving truck(s)
  • Ask movers to place labeled boxes in the designated room(s)
  • Give your PC time to acclimate to room temperature before plugging in
  • Hook up TV first to occupy the kids while the van is being unloaded
  • Set up essential rooms first, such as the bathroom and bedroom(s)
  • Call to have utilities turned on the day before move in day.
  • Order take-out or ask friends and family to bring meals so you don’t have to cook
  • Unpack food items quickly to prevent them from spoiling
